Ender is made a commander of an army in battle school. He commands an army that goes by Dragon. Anderson informs him that they picked his team for him and he would not be able to trade team members. They gave him both launch students and some veterans. Ender is shown to his new quarters and then left alone. He goes to his army’s barracks and meets the boys. They have their first practice and he shows his army his unique techniques. Later he runs into Alai and after their discussion both of them realize that because of Ender’s promotion their friendship will be at best put on hold for a time. This chapter is a pivotal one. It starts off with Ender worrying about going to school and how a potential encounter with Stilson would go. An I.F. Colonel by the name of Graff comes to the house. Ender thinks he is there to punish him for the fight with Stilson that had happened the day before. Graff tells them that he is actually there to take Ender to battle school. The family and Ender are hesitant at first. Graff takes Ender away and tells him about his parents history, about them being religious and that a third child for them was embarrassing and shameful because of their religious backgrounds and the social norms. After the discussion Ender decides to go with Graff and says good bye to his family. Ender's Game, Chapters 8-15
Chapter 8, "Rat"
In the opening dialogue, Colonel Graff and Major Anderson discuss changing the game to test Ender's abilities.
Ender has been traded to the Rat Army, where he is put in Dink Meeker's toon. Ender continues hislaunchy practice sessions. The commander of Rat Army also picks on Ender, but he allows him to actually fight. The launchies who practice with Ender are threatened if they continue to attend the extra sessions. Those who do show up for the session have a real fight with some of the older boys, which Ender and his group win. The teachers don't do anything to punish the older boys. Ender goes back to the fantasy game where he kills the snake and sees Peter in the mirror with the snake's tail hanging out of his mouth; his figure in the game is finally killed by a lot of little snakes. Some of the army commanders send older boys to Ender's practice sessions, assuring that the other boys don't disrupt the sessions. Ender doesn't go back to th

The chapter opens with a conversation revealing the identities of Demosthenes and Locke. Valentine comes to enjoy writing Demosthenes, and her writing grows independent of Peter. She goes with Graff to see Ender at the lake, another request to motivate Ender. She tells her brother about Locke and Demosthenes, discusses with him the changes which have taken place, and by the end, Ender decides to go to Command school with Graff, as he was supposed to do some time ago. He was only allowed to stay because his spirits were so low. On the tug, Ender learns that Graff will be accompanying him all the way, and he also learns about the buggers from Graff: their defeats in the first two invasions, the way they communicate, and the reaction of the military to that information. The chapter closes with Ender commiting himself to at least try his best to become the commander that defeats the buggers. The chapter starts with Graff talking to someone about Ender being stuck at the Giant's Drink and compare him to another little boy who kept going back to it and ended up killing himself. The discussion ends with talk of Ender being poisonous to the launch group, but Graff insists that the isolation was necessary for Ender. Their discussion ends and the chapter begins with Ender and his group of launchies going into the battleroom for the first time. As he explores zero gravity circumstances and learns how to manipulate himself in it, Ender befriends Bernard's friend Alai. They figure out that the guns that are on their flash suits freeze whatever part of suit they hit by shooting each other in the foot. Then they decide to freeze all the other launchies. They got Bernard and Shen together with them and then froze everyone else. During study time back in their room, Ender plays Free Play on his desk. He gets through all the obstacles he's seen before, but he keeps getting stuck at the Giant's guessing game--

Künstlerroman Essay
Section II (Mike)
Michael Flavin
My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok is Similar to The Song of The Lark Willa Cather in many respects. Both novels are Kunstlerromans and therefore both Asher and Thea go through the same stages of the genre. However when analyzing the first stage, that of confinement, rapidly it becomes clear that Asher’s experience is quite different from Thea’s. The first stage of Thea’s journey manifests itself by way of both geographical seclusion and interference by other characters in the story. Asher, on the other hand lives in Brooklyn and is therefore surrounded by all the elements that nurture a developing artist. What confines Asher is not his location but his cultural and religious background. This religious and cultural confinement is enforced by Asher’s father.
Aryeh, Asher’s father, is undoubtedly the character in the novel that is most vocal about his dislike of Asher’s art. Aryeh is one of the Rebbe’s most trusted assistants.

The chapter begins with two unidentified voices talking about "him" and his brother and sister. They decided to "take him" because they are "saving the world." Ender (Andrew Wiggin) has his monitor removed. He thinks that now maybe his brother Peter, who has "mad moods," will like him. After the procedure, children at school tease Ender for beinga "Third" (a third child authorized by the government, which restricts families to two children).
