The Song of the Lark, Part II

 

Chapter 1

 Thea and Dr. Archie are in Chicago looking for a place for her to stay and to begin studying. They meet the minister of a church, tell him that Thea will be studying under Andor Harsanyi, and explain that that's why Thea is looking for a job in the church-- to help pay for her lessons. Mr. Larsen says that his choir is full, but he'll try Thea's voice anyway. Being impressed, he offers her a temporary job while his Soprano is out, and gives Dr. Archie the name of Mrs. Lorch and her daughter as a possible place for Thea to stay while in Chicago. [SM]

 

 

Chapter 2

 We are introduced to the people Thea will board with, Mrs. Lorch and Mrs. Andersen, and how Thea reacts to them. (D.W.)

 

 

Chapter 3

 

Andor Harsanyi, Thea's piano teacher in Chicago, learns about his student's ignorance and abilities.  He notes her lack of curiosity.  He also learns that she sings, and he decides to start teaching her some songs. (E.C.)

Chapter 6

 Harsanyi has a meeting with Theodore Thomas (conductor of Chicago Symphony Orchestra).  He asks who he believes to be the best voice teacher in Chicago.  Thomas answers that Madison Bowers is the best.  Harsanyi then tells Thomas about Thea's voice and her talent.  (HG)

 

 

Chapter 7

 Mr. Harsanyi confronts Thea about her plans in going back home. He offers her a voice lessons with Mr. Bowers instead of a music  lessons with him.  Thea is very shocked and expains she has no time or money and she likes her music lessons. She is not convinced that she should sing more than play the piano. Mrs. Harsanyi is also surprised with her husband's choice, but decides he will do what he feels he needs to.

 

 

Chapter 8

 Thea is on the train ride home from Chicago to Moonstone for the summer, and she reflects on the past winter, especially on the change from working on her piano playing to focusing on her voice and the confidence she gained, and also on the "feeling of empire" she felt she shared with Ray Kennedy. [SM]

 

 

Chapter 9

 

Thea returns to Moonstone for the summer. She is asked to sing at a funeral, refuses, but is then convinced to perform by Mrs. Kronborg. (D.W.)

 

 

Chapter 10

 

At home in Moonstone, Thea goes to a party in Mexican Town.  Mrs. Kohler hears her singing with Spanish Johnny and others after the party. (E.C.)
