Chapter 1
Dr. Howard Archie is called to the Kronborg home to deliver their seventh child. He discovers that Thea, a young girl who is a friend of his, is very ill. He begins her treatment. (E.C.)
Chapter 2
Thea recovers rapidly. Dr. Archie visits one afternoon a week after the baby was born. He brings Thea grapes and talks to her about Byron's poetry that she's reading. Dr. Archie arranges for Mrs. Kronborg to give an old overcoat of his to Professor Wunsch, Thea's piano teacher. We learn about Mr. and Mrs. Kronborg. (E.C.)

We are introduced to Mrs. Archie in this chapter. Dr. Archie sends Thea to his house to pick strawberries since Mrs. Archie doesn't know what to do with them. Thea doesn't want to go, but begrudgingly take Thor and goes. Thea is treated rudely by Mrs. Archie and is given a small container to put her strawberries in. She picks them and feels sorry for the Dr., because he would have been ashamed at how his wife acted. (HG)
Chapter 6
Dr. Archie invites Thea to go with him on a house call to check on Spanish Johnny. Before their visit, they talk about books and the history of cities. Thea has an opinion that Country people and City People are very different. When they arrive, Thea is immersed in Spanish music, while the doctor tends to Spanish Johnny. We learn that sometimes Spanish Johnny goes "crazy" and leaves his wife for awhile to play music in the saloons. Thea doesn't approve of the way Mrs. Tellamantez sits and waits for him to come back, but changes her mind and becomes in awe of Mrs. Tellamantez after listening to a seashell.
Chapter 7
We are introduced to Ray Kennedy and to his intentions of marrying Thea. Axel, Gunner, Thea, Spanish Johnny, Mrs. Tellamantez, all ride with Ray Kennedy out to "the hills" and Thea continually presses Ray to tell stories about his past. Then, she remembers hearing the story from an old rancher about how he'd been there when the first telegraph came through. The chapter ends with the party leaving the desert for home with Johnny and Ray singing a railroad song together. [SM]
Chapter 8
There is a church recital and Thea and Lilly Fisher have a little rivalry. Thea's peace is less rewarding to the audience than Lilly's and Thea was less than happy about it. (D.W.)
Chapter 9
We learn about Thea's parents' and aunt's feelings and thoughts about her, as well as Tillie's dramatic interests and Thea's acting and singing talents. (E.C.)

We learn that Wunsch is leaving soon and the Dr. advises Thea to learn as much as she can before that happens. We also learn more about Dr. Archie's feelings of his wife and that he knows she is bound to her because divorce is not an option. (HG)
Chapter 13
Thea is enjoying the summer, teaching music lessons and taking care of Thor. By September her lesson with Wunsch was canceled when Mrs. Kocher and Mrs. Tellamantez found he drank too much. Later, Dr. Archie, Fritz, Spanish Johnny and Ray arrive to take care of him, and try to persuade Thea to leave. Only Dr. Archie convinces her. When Wunsch wakes up, he is watched carefully. After he recovers, Wunsch leaves for Denver without telling anyone goodbye, but Thea sees him off at the train station. After he leaves, no one expects him to come back.
Chapter 14
Mr. and Mrs. Kronborg ride out to Copper Hole and talk about Thea. Mr. Kronborg thinks she should raise her prices for teaching, talks about trying to get her more settled (building an addition to the house for her lessons), and though Mrs. Kronborg thinks Thea should be allowed to have the next couple years to herself, she does end up agreeing that Thea should take on some responsibility with her teaching. At the end of the chapter, we learn that Thea has quit school, is teaching pretty much full-time, but prides herself on being able to use her income to help the family. [SM]
Chapter 15
We learn that Thea is becoming an established music teacher in Moonstone. We also find out even more about Ray's feelings for Thea, and he suggests to her that she go to Chicago to study music someday. (D.W.)
Chapter 16
Thea and Mrs. Kronborg make a trip to Denver in Ray Kennedy's caboose. Ray tells stories. They stop at Wassiwappa and have lunch there. (E.C.)

Dr. Archie comes to to the Kronborg house to fetch Mr. Kronborg and Thea. Ray Kennedy has been in a train accident and the situation is dire. He has requested the presence of Thea to be there with him. The two of them are left alone and Ray and Thea talk. Ray expresses some of his feelings for her. Thea and Mr. Kronborg head back to Moonstone and Ray dies that afternoon while Dr. Archie is with him. (HG)
Chapter 20
The day after Ray's funneral, Dr. Archie and Mr. Kronborg discover Ray wanted all his money to be used for Thea to go study music in Chicago. The Kronborg family prepares Thea for her new life, and Thea leaves Moonstone with Dr. Archie helping her find a place to stay. Thea feels very confident about her future in Chicago.
