A künstlerroman, literally an "artist novel," traces the protagonist's development as an artist. Typically, the budding artists in these novels suffer from restrictions or interference in their homes or communities, gain their freedom and move to a distant place, receive training in their art, and reach a level of achievement in it. Thea Kronborg in Willa Cather's The Song of the Lark and Asher Lev in Chaim Potok's My Name Is Asher Lev both pass through these four stages of the künstlerroman: confinement, escape, education, and success ("Künstlerroman").
